The thing that really gets me most about sleep medicine is my ability to actually change people’s lives.  I have the great opportunity of often times being able to change people’s lives almost in 48 hours.  It’s really been quite an experience for me and I want to tell you about one of the first success stories.  I walked into the room and saw a man who is a little bit heavy set who tells me he’s GBI agent – that is the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

We started talking a bit and he said, “Doctor Breus, I’ve had some real problems” So, I said, “Well you tell me a little more about it.” And, he said, “Well here’s the thing, I fall asleep on stakeouts.  I snore so loudly that people won’t even sit with me in the car.  They put me on a desk job now.” And, he added, “I’m gaining weight. I’m miserable when I – when I go home. I’m not happy to be home. I’m not happy to do the things that I used to be able to do. I am not particularly nice and kind of cranky all the time and I don’t feel good when I wake up in the morning.”

Finally, I said “Well let’s kind of a look at this.”

Within a few minutes I realized that he’s got a lot of the signs and symptoms of something called Obstructive Sleep Apnea.  That’s a situation when people stop breathing at night.  Now the good news is this they do start breathing again.  But, they wake up several times a night and this fellow, as it turns out, was having episodes of stopping breathing literally hundreds of times a night. He had absolutely no idea that this was going on, which is often times the case.

So, I sent him to the sleep laboratory to have a sleep test done.  And we did a special kind of study where half the night we diagnosed him and then half the night we put him on something called the C-PAP machine.  This is a machine that helps people breathe throughout the evening. 

He comes back a couple of weeks later for the results and I walk in his wife and she gives me this tremendous hug she said, “I just want to thank you.”  And I said, “whatever for?” She said, “You gave me my husband back.” It was really amazing.  The man turned to me and said, “I’ll never forget this.” He said, “Michael, here’s my card, there’s a number on the back of that card. If you’re ever in trouble call that number and you won’t be.”

And as they were walking out the wife turned to me and she said, “I don’t think I’ll be needing these,” as she handed me a group of papers.  I opened them up and they were divorce papers.  She’d actually gotten to the point where she was about ready to file for divorce because it was such a horrible situation.

So, I think I’ve actually saved more marriages as a sleep specialist, than I ever would have as a clinical psychologist just being able to help people get a better night’s rest.
